Dear Daisy - I've had writers' block for a decade
How can I write when I don't know what to write about?
Hello Team CCC! I hope you’re having a wonderful week! I’ve been hanging out with my friends at the London Writers’ Salon (and I loved doing this interview with them!) I was delighted to attend the launch of this brilliant new charity, Bookbanks, and I went to TWO SHOWS - Bikini Kill at the Roundhouse, and the Clarendon Players in Daisy Pulls It Off at Royal Wootton Bassett memorial hall. I also went to the DHH Literary summer party, a fabulous celebration of writers, and everyone who works to help writers write!
PITY PARTY is out in just under a month! I’d be delighted if you could preorder it from one of these retailers. It’s a really brilliant way to support me and this newsletter, especially if you’re not in a position to pay for a subscription - and absolutely everyone who preorders the hardback (or in any format if you’re outside the UK) is invited to a Pity Party party and fiction writing workshop I’m hosting on Zoom. Find out how to get your invite here.
This edition of the letter is for paying subscribers - and I’ve just introduced The Readers’ Club, which is a way of making this work as affordable as possible for as many people as possible. Words without the bells and whistles - you don’t get all the extras, but you get access to paywalled letters and archives. Hit the button below to find out more!
Now, for this week’s Dear Daisy…
I’ve had writer’s block for a decade
I want to write, badly. But I don't have a clue what to write about.
The thing is, I used to write a lot when I was younger, I was blogging but it was also my job as a journalist. I then left the job and the industry, stopped blogging and stopped writing. It's been over a decade now.
For the last 3/4 years I decided that I wanted to write again. So I started reading all about it, taking writing workshops and taking journaling challenges. But outside of these steps, I don't write and most importantly, I have no idea what topics to write about.
Also, I lately came to the conclusion that I DO NOT LIKE to journal. My life is boring, nothing interesting is happening and I find writing over and over and over about my thoughts and feelings depressing. I tried many times but journaling doesn't bring the joy or fulfilment that I want to find when I am writing. But I'm clueless as to what would make me enjoy writing.
Does that mean that writing isn't actually my thing ? How do I find the genre of writing that I like and want to pursue ? (Should I mention that writing fiction terrifies me ?)
A so-called writer
